Enshittification for AI Training; Bisan Owda

Bisan Owda, journalist in Gaza, regularly posting videos on social media, picked up by AJ+, has now won an Emmy Award to go along with her Peabody Award.

This journalist has escaped death multiple times, seen her people and community bombed daily, in a bombing campaign most around the work describe as “genocide.” Through her work, she has undermined and changed the narrative about Palestine, and upended the dehumanizing stereotypes that justified ongoing violence against Palestinians.

StackExchange is doing the same thing as Reddit in ruining their platform for users in an attempt to try to make profit off their [content] as a resource for AI training data.

  • Enshittification – “the gradual decline of online platforms due to greed.” “Greed” is an inadequate analysis: degredation is caused by the the way internet-based software is financed, through enthusiasm, by investors, precisely because there’s the potential for monopoly in any online software niche. The “quality” people enjoy during the early days of a platform is a simulation of an idealized, utopian, “socialism” or “communism” in goods and services, where prices are kept low or free, because services are paid for by an unseen institution (the state, or venture capitalists, or plain old capitalists) or are created by the users themselves (user generated content). Eventually, you must pay the piper, unless the services are paid for through collective ownership and operation of said platform. A similar concept is Enclosure of the Commons, and Primitive Accumulation.
